HISTORIAN MICHAEL WOOD TAKES A DAZZLING JOURNEY THROUGH MODERN INDIA TO UNCOVER THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST DEMOCRACY AND A RISING ECONOMIC GIANT
From the deserts of Turkmenistan to the Khyber Pass, from war-torn Iraq to the palm-fringed shores of Kerala, historian Michael Wood journeys across the Indian subcontinent and beyond to uncover the fabulous sights, the dramatic history and the dazzling achievements of the world’s oldest and most influential civilization in The Story of India (Mondays, January 5th-19th, 2009, 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. ET on PBS).
This six-episode series covers a history filled with fascinating figures, amazing tales and some of the worlds most momentous and moving events, from the high-tech genius of Bangalore’s Silicon Valley, to the archaic beauty of the Kumbh Mela festival, the rise to becoming the worlds largest democracy and much more. While moving at high speed into the modern world, India is still in touch with her ancient past.
This dedication from PBS, tragically preceded by the devastating attacks on Mumbai, should be celebrated by watching together with friends, family, and others sharing Indian heritage. Understanding, along with the creation of community and group solidarity is the strongest force against the violence and intimidation of terrorism.
“A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.”
- Mohandas Ghandi -
